Garganta de los Infiernos Mountain Race

The Garganta de los Infiernos Mountain Race is one of the most spectacular events on the Extremadura calendar. Covering 26 kilometres with 1,500 metres of elevation gain, it runs entirely through the Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve in the heart of the Jerte Valley (Cáceres). Organised by Club Deportivo Jerte, the 2026 edition marks its XIV year.

The course

The race starts at 9:30 AM from the Plaza de la Independencia in Jerte. The course crosses endless trails and stunning natural landmarks:

  • Los Pilones — Natural pools carved by water erosion, the iconic symbol of the Garganta
  • Fisherman’s Refuge — An emblematic point in the heart of the reserve
  • Charles V Bridge — A historic 16th-century bridge over the Jerte River
  • Five high-mountain bridges — Spectacular crossings over gorges and streams

The terrain is pure mountain: technical trails, hunter and fisherman paths, stream crossings and waterfalls. A demanding race designed for well-trained runners.

Aid stations

There are two aid stations on the course:

  • Km 15 — Water and solid food
  • Km 23 — Water and solid food

The first 15 km have no aid station, so it is essential to start with enough water and food.

Mandatory gear

All runners must carry: mountain running shoes, hooded long-sleeve windbreaker, emergency blanket (minimum 1.20 x 2.10 m), whistle, water container and mobile phone. Mandatory gear checks are carried out.

The Jerte Valley in April

April is the month of the cherry blossom in the Jerte Valley, one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Spain. If you come to run this race, take the opportunity to enjoy the cherry trees in bloom, local gastronomy (Jerte cherries, Vera paprika) and the charming villages of the valley.
