Noche Roja: Las 100 Millas de Boñar

Noche Roja is a backyard ultra born in Boñar, a town in the Montaña Oriental Leonesa, built around a simple idea: you’re not competing against the others, you’re competing against your own desire to quit. It’s a fully free event thanks to sponsorship from the Boñar town council, and it’s registered with DUV (Deutscher Ultramarathon-Verband), so results count toward each runner’s international ultra-distance record.

A challenge of loops: the backyard format

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, runners face a circular course of 6.7 km that must be completed every hour, on the hour, for up to 24 laps in 24 hours. Whoever completes 24 laps within time is declared the winner; if no one manages it, the winner is whoever outlasts everyone else. Within that same loop, the organizers mark five milestones for those chasing a shorter challenge: half marathon (3 laps), mountain marathon (7), 50 miles (12), 100 kilometers (15), and the full 100 miles (24 laps). A headlamp is mandatory during all nighttime hours, and trekking poles and headphones are banned on the course.

The Alto Porma by night

The course runs through a circuit “of great beauty” in the Alto Porma, deep in the Montaña Oriental Leonesa. The real challenge isn’t just the accumulated distance, but the temperature swing between the heat of the early July laps and the cold that sets in after dark in this mountain area. Managing clothing layers, a spare headlamp, and your own nutrition strategy — official aid stays basic — is key to lasting until sunrise. Check our gear guide before packing your support box.

Boñar beyond the race

While runners loop the course, Boñar hosts La Vuelta Roja, a night hiking route open to locals and visitors who want to follow the challenge from the outside. The town, gateway to the Montaña Oriental Leonesa, sits a short drive from Riaño and its reservoir, and about 45 minutes from the city of León. Add this free, community-driven race to your season planner and explore the rest of the region’s races in our Castilla y León guide.
