Arganza Trail: through the heart of the Cañón del Río Lobos

Arganza Trail is one of the most established mountain races in Castilla y León. From San Leonardo de Yagüe, in Soria’s Pinares region, the courses head into the Cañón del Río Lobos, one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the Castilian plateau.

With 15 editions under its belt, Arganza Trail has become the race that opens the Castilla y León Mountain Running Cup calendar. Every April, hundreds of runners gather in this corner of Soria to run trails between limestone cliffs, pine forests, and the unmistakable silhouette of griffon vultures soaring above the canyon.

The distances

  • 33K Trail — 1,900m D+, the main event. A complete tour of the Cañón del Río Lobos and surrounding hills, with technical sections and canyon panoramas from the ridges.
  • 21K Trail — 1,100m D+, for junior and promise categories, and for runners seeking a tough challenge without the full distance.
  • 10K Trail — 600m D+, the introductory distance. Ideal for a first taste of mountain trail running in a spectacular setting.
  • Kids 5K — 250m D+, for the youngest runners. Turns the day into a family event.

There’s also the Corremontes (sports hiking) option on the long and short distances, for those who prefer to enjoy the course without racing.

The Cañón del Río Lobos

The Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park is one of Spain’s most unique natural spaces. Declared a Natural Park in 1985, the canyon stretches 25 kilometres carved by the Río Lobos through limestone rock. Its cliffs host one of Europe’s largest griffon vulture colonies, and at the canyon’s heart stands the Templar hermitage of San Bartolomé, a place steeped in history and mystery.

The terrain combines canyon-floor trails among poplars and ash trees, climbs through pine-forested slopes, and ridges with views over the gorge. In April, spring begins to awaken in Soria’s pine forests and the canyon shows its greenest face.

San Leonardo de Yagüe and the Pinares region

San Leonardo de Yagüe is the eastern gateway to the Cañón del Río Lobos. Soria’s Pinares region is a land of vast forests, quiet villages, and hearty cuisine based on mushrooms, game, and local produce.

A short drive away, El Burgo de Osma offers a historic episcopal town with a Gothic cathedral and some of the province’s finest dining. And if you’re staying for the weekend, Laguna Negra and the Picos de Urbión are less than an hour away.
