Trail Montañas del Aranda: running the hidden side of the Moncayo

The Trail Montañas del Aranda is the trail running event of Brea de Aragón, a small town in the western part of Zaragoza province that hides one of Aragón’s most singular stories: handmade shoes have been crafted here since 1606, making the town the cradle of Aragonese footwear and home to the Shoe Museum.

The race takes runners into the Sierra de la Virgen, on the so-called “hidden side of the Moncayo”, an Iberian System massif covered in scrubland, juniper, holm oak and reforested pine woods that peaks at Monte Cabrera (1,433 m). It’s a genuine mid-mountain setting: rugged, wild and refreshingly uncrowded.

Three distances for every level

The flagship is the 21K, with 1,175 metres of positive elevation gain: a demanding route that links the toughest climbs of the sierra and rewards runners with sweeping views of the Aranda valley. For those after a first experience or a more accessible challenge, the 12K (375 m of climbing) offers the same mountain spirit in a shorter format.

The most inclusive addition is the 12K walking option, designed to complete the route on foot and enjoy the scenery without the pressure of the clock. Three options make the Trail Montañas del Aranda suitable for seasoned runners and newcomers to the mountains alike.

November in the sierra: be ready for the cold

The race is held on 7 November 2026, in the heart of autumn. By then, mornings in the Sierra de la Virgen can be cold and windy at altitude, so a windbreaker and smart layering make all the difference. The field is capped at 300 participants, ensuring a close-knit, community feel.

The Aranda county beyond the race

Brea de Aragón shares its valley with Illueca, birthplace of the Papa Luna and crowned by its imposing medieval castle. Watered by the Aranda and Isuela rivers, the county is a quiet destination ideal for combining sport and heritage. Don’t miss the Mudéjar church of Santa Ana or a visit to the Shoe Museum.
