Ultra Trail Bosques del Sur

Ultra Trail Bosques del Sur is a trail running race through the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park, the largest protected natural area in Spain, spanning over 200,000 hectares of forests, gorges and mountain ridges.

The race starts from Plaza de la Constitucion in Cazorla and finishes at the Ruins of Santa Maria, in the old town of this charming village in the province of Jaen. Five distances for all levels, from the Kids 4K for young runners to the Ultra 70K for the most demanding athletes.

The Course

The trails of Bosques del Sur wind through one of the most impressive forest landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula. Runners will pass through:

  • Ancient Laricio pine forests — Centuries-old specimens of Cazorla’s native pine
  • Escaleruela Trail — A historic path carved into the rock
  • Puerto del Tejo and Puerto de los Arenales — Mountain passes with panoramic views
  • Puente de las Herrerias — A medieval bridge over the Guadalquivir River
  • Cerrada de Utrero — A spectacular gorge carved by the Guadalquivir

The terrain mixes forest trails, technical rocky sections and some tarmac stretches. The elevation, while demanding, does not reach extreme altitude: the highest points sit around 1,800m.

Distances and Prices

Ultra Trail Bosques del Sur offers five distances spread across two weekends:

May 30, 2026:

  • Ultra 70K — 3,700m D+, 17h time limit, 3 ITRA points. From 72 EUR (FEDME members) to 90 EUR.
  • Marathon 42K — 2,438m D+, 10h time limit, 1 ITRA point. From 50 EUR to 55 EUR.

June 6, 2026:

  • Half 21K — 1,190m D+, 5h time limit. From 35 EUR to 40 EUR.
  • Mini 10K — 600m D+, 3h time limit. From 20 EUR to 25 EUR.

June 7, 2026:

  • Kids 4K — A children’s race around the outskirts of Cazorla. A perfect introduction to the world of trail running for young athletes.

The Heat Factor

In late May, temperatures in Cazorla can exceed 30°C in the lower sections. Hydration and sun protection are absolutely critical, especially in the Ultra and Marathon. The pine forests provide shade over much of the course, but the exposed summit sections offer no cover. Plan your hydration with our hydration calculator to stay on top of your fluid needs in the heat.

Cazorla: More Than Just a Race

The Cazorla Natural Park is a top-tier nature destination. It is the source of the Guadalquivir River, home to one of the largest griffon vulture populations in Europe, and offers a spectacular network of hiking trails. Make the most of the days before or after the race to explore the area: the Cerrada de Elias gorge, the Tranco Reservoir and the source of the Guadalquivir are must-see stops.

The town of Cazorla itself, with its Yedra Castle and the Ruins of Santa Maria, is a destination worth several days of exploration.
