Xtreme Higa de Monreal: the challenge of the Pamplona Basin giant

The Xtreme Higa de Monreal is one of the classic trail running events in Navarra. Since 2009, Club Deportivo Elomendi has organized this challenge featuring the Higa de Monreal (1,289 m), the most iconic mountain in the Pamplona Basin, visible from dozens of kilometers around.

Starting and finishing in the village of Monreal (Elo in Basque), the race offers two distances that share the same goal: reaching the Higa summit through forgotten trails recovered by the organizers.

Xtreme Larga 21K: the full loop

The Xtreme Larga 21K is the main event, with 1,145 meters of elevation gain on a circular route around the Higa de Monreal. The terrain combines forest tracks, technical trails, and sections equipped with safety chains on the steepest parts. Maximum altitude reaches 1,289 meters at the summit.

Key highlights of the 21K:

  • 200 spots limited
  • 3 hours 30 minutes estimated maximum time
  • Technical sections with chains on the most exposed areas
  • Routes along recovered trails that had been abandoned for years

Xtreme Corta 12K: mountain trail initiation

The Xtreme Corta 12K offers 556 meters of elevation gain with a maximum altitude of 1,067 meters. A demanding but accessible route, ideal for those looking to discover the Higa without tackling the full course. Also limited to 200 spots.

Monreal: gateway to the Higa

Monreal is a small Navarrese village just 25 minutes from Pamplona, on the Camino de Santiago. Its historic center, with the medieval bridge over the Elorz river and Santa María church, is worth exploring before or after the race.

The Higa de Monreal dominates the Pamplona Basin landscape like a sentinel: its conical silhouette is unmistakable, and its ascent is a challenge that Navarrese mountain runners know well. Check out other races in Navarra and plan your season with the planner.
