Bera Mountain Half Marathon

The Bera Mountain Half Marathon is one of the most established mountain races in Navarre. In 2026 it celebrates its 20th edition, organised by the Manttale Mendi Lasterketa Taldea club in this village in the Bidasoa valley, on the border with France.

The course is a true mountain adventure: 21.81 km with 1,376 metres of elevation gain, starting from 32 metres altitude in Bera and climbing to the 900-metre summit of Larun (La Rhune in French), the iconic mountain on the Basque-French border.

The course

The race starts from Bera’s sports centre (Kanttonberri kalea) and traverses the mountains surrounding the village:

  • Km 4-5: Postas-Manttale area, first steep climbs
  • Km 6.6: Ibardin, the famous border crossing with its shops
  • Km 10: Usategieta, deeper into the mountains
  • Km 10.8: Landagaita, key midpoint
  • Km 13: Zizkuitz, final ramp before Larun
  • Km 14: Larun summit (900m), the highest and most spectacular point
  • Km 15-21: Descent via Zizkuitz, Landagaita, and Zumalku to the finish

This is a new course for this edition, meaning the historical records by Oier Ariznabarreta (1:37:30) and Ainhoa Sanz (1:56:56) won’t be in play.

Terrain and difficulty

The terrain is pure mountain: trails, forest tracks, and summit sections across the border mountains. The elevation ratio is high (63 m/km), making this half marathon a demanding test. Altitude ranges from 32 metres by the Bidasoa river to 900 metres atop Larun.

The time limit is 3 hours and 40 minutes, with cut-off controls at key points along the course.

Logistics

Bib collection takes place on Saturday evening (5:00-6:30 PM) and Sunday morning (8:00-9:00 AM) at Bera’s cultural centre. The baggage storage closes 30 minutes before the start.

There are 3 retirement points for those who need to drop out: Ibardin (km 6), Usategieta (km 10), and Landagaita return (km 17).

A Bidasoa classic

Bera is one of the five villages of the Bortziriak (Five Towns), in the far north of Navarre. The race is part of the Navarre Mountain Racing Circuit and attracts runners from Navarre, the Basque Country, and southern France.

With 525 spots and 20 years of history, it’s a must-run on the Navarre spring calendar. Check your season planner to combine it with other races in the area.
