Haritzen Mendi Lasterketa: Mountain Racing in the Alaitz Range

The Haritzen Mendi Lasterketa (HML) is a mountain race through the Alaitz range starting from Unzué, in the Valdorba area of Navarra (Spain). Organized by the CAD Tafalla mountain group, its 2nd edition in 2026 comes with a major milestone: inclusion in the Navarra Cup of the Navarre Mountain Sports Federation.

Two routes for all levels: the Haritza (24.25 km / 1,650 m D+) and the Artea (11 km / 550 m D+), both starting and finishing at the Unzué fronton (pelota court).

The Course: Forests, Ridges and Karst

The race starts from the Unzué fronton and quickly enters the Alaitz range. The terrain is varied and technical:

  • Mediterranean forest in the lower areas with holm oak and gall oak
  • Beech woods on north-facing slopes
  • Karst ridges with constant ups and downs: the most demanding and spectacular section
  • Technical descents on forest trails back to the village

The highest point, Bagarrigodi (1,171 m), offers panoramic views of Valdorba, the Pamplona basin and the Pyrenees on clear days. The lowest point on the route, Txirkoa, sits at 612 m.

Key details for the long course (Haritza):

  • 24.25 km distance, 1,650 m D+
  • 4 aid stations: Echagüe, Borda de Lepuzain, Bagadigorri and Fuente de Arregia
  • Time limit: 5 hours
  • Karst ridge section with vertiginous descents

Environmental and Social Commitment

The HML stands out for its zero waste protocol: runners must carry their own cup for aid stations. The organization avoids the ascent to Peña de Unzué to protect raptor nesting sites.

Part of the registration fees support local associations including DEBRA (butterfly skin disease), ASFAPE and GERNA. New in 2026: a partnership with LYMEtro a metro Navarra for Lyme disease prevention, with tick removal kits included in the race pack.

Unzué and Valdorba

Unzué is a small Navarrese village at the foot of the Alaitz range, in the heart of Valdorba. A transitional area between Navarra’s wet north and the drier central zone, with landscapes mixing farmland, forests and limestone ranges.

The Alaitz range is a little-visited natural enclave, ideal for hiking and trail running. Its karst terrain, with dolines, limestone pavements and sharp ridges, offers a technically challenging and visually spectacular course.
