Riaño Trail Run
The Riaño Trail Run is a multi-stage trail race held every June in the Riaño Mountains (León, Spain). Organised by TerraIncognita, the event offers three modalities: 3xTrail (84 km over 3 stages), 2xTrail (47.6 km over 2 stages) and Riaño Open (42.9 km single stage). The course traverses three distinct mountain ranges: Picos de Europa, Montaña Palentina and the Riaño and Mampodre Mountains.
The stages
- Stage 1 (Friday 26 June) — Oseja de Sajambre → Caín de Valdeón. 36.3 km. Start at 8:15 AM. Cutoff: 6:15 PM.
- Stage 2 (Saturday 27 June) — Valverde de la Sierra (loop). 21.5 km. Start at 9:00 AM. Cutoff: 3:00 PM.
- Stage 3 (Sunday 28 June) — Riaño. 26.2 km. Start at 8:30 AM. Cutoff: 2:30 PM.
The Riaño Open starts on Sunday from Lario at 7:00 AM, covering 42.9 km with 2,120m D+ and finishing in Riaño.
Three mountain ranges, one race
What makes the Riaño Trail Run unique is that it connects three mountain systems in a single event. The first stage crosses Picos de Europa on the Leonese side, linking Oseja de Sajambre with Caín de Valdeón along high mountain trails. The second stage explores the Montaña Palentina from Valverde de la Sierra. The third covers the Riaño and Mampodre Mountains, finishing in Riaño itself. Use our nutrition calculator to plan your fueling across three consecutive mountain days.
The reservoir and the village
Riaño is a village rebuilt above the waters of the Riaño Reservoir, inaugurated in 1987. The old village lies beneath the water, and the new one was built on the hillside overlooking the lake. The surrounding landscape is spectacular: limestone mountains rising vertically above turquoise waters, beech and oak forests, and wildlife including chamois, roe deer and golden eagles. It’s one of the wildest and least-known corners of the Cantabrian Mountains.
Stage race format
The Riaño Trail Run is a pure stage race: each day features an independent race with its own start and finish, and the overall classification adds up the times from all stages. The organisation arranges transfers between start and finish points, and offers Riaño Camp as a base camp for participants. The experience goes beyond competition: it’s a three-day mountain journey through the Leonese highlands.
