Terrain
Castile and Leon concentrates some of the wildest mountains in the peninsula. The Sierra de Gredos, with its glacial cirques and Almanzor peak (2,592m), offers technical high-mountain terrain with granite blocks and glacial lakes. The northern face of Sierra de Guadarrama provides pine forest and rock landscapes, while the Leonese Picos de Europa surprise with brutal elevation gains and Atlantic forests. The flat, windy Castilian plateau contrasts with these peaks and adds psychological toughness to long ultras.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The continental climate imposes extreme conditions. Winters are harsh, with abundant snow in the ranges until May, while July and August bring stifling heat on the plateau and storms at high altitude. Spring and autumn offer the best windows: mild temperatures, accessible peaks, and landscapes in full transformation. Mornings can be freezing even in June, so always go prepared.
Trail culture
Castile and Leon is the region of the solitary, resilient trail runner. Here you don't seek glamour, but a direct encounter with raw mountain: glacial cirques, shepherds still using their old trails, stone villages where the bar closes at ten. The trail community is strong but discreet, with veterans who know every Gredos pass and young runners rediscovering forgotten ranges. Races have epic names—Backyard Haciendo Sed, Ultrail La Covatilla—and the philosophy is clear: the mountain rules, the runner adapts.
