Transvulcania 2026
Recommended sun protection
La Palma's volcanic landscape offers virtually zero natural shade. In May, the Canary Islands UV index is high, and the exposed Ruta de los Volcanes and Roque de los Muchachos sections leave runners under direct sun for hours.
Topical sun protection products specific to trail running: SPF 50+ sport sunscreen resistant to water and sweat, SPF lip balm and after-sun for recovery. At altitude, UV radiation increases by 10-12% per 1,000 metres, making sun protection not an extra but mandatory gear.
Based on historical data from the last 10 years
☀️ 12 hours of sunshine expected. Reapply SPF 50+ every 2 hours.
⛰️ At the race altitude, UV radiation is ~48% stronger than at sea level.
