Reventón Trail

Reventón Trail is one of the most iconic mountain races in the Canary Islands and an unmissable event for trail running enthusiasts visiting La Palma. Every March, the town of El Paso becomes the epicentre of island trail running with a race that combines sporting challenge, otherworldly volcanic landscapes, and a unique atmosphere.

Reventón Trail (sponsored by Fred Olsen Express) offers six distances that let runners experience La Palma at every level, from the 8 km Starter to the 70.5 km Ultra Trail, plus the magical Subida a las Estrellas under one of the cleanest skies on the planet.

The course

All races start from El Paso (586m) and cross the island’s most spectacular natural parks. The Ultra Trail and Maratón traverse the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, reaching altitudes of up to 1,925 metres.

The landscapes along the course are breathtaking:

  • Caldera de Taburiente - A 9 km-wide erosion crater with walls up to 2,000m
  • Cumbre Vieja - Volcanic ridge with Atlantic Ocean views
  • El Reventón - Iconic section with gradients exceeding 35%
  • Canarian pine forests - Trails through laurel forest and pine groves above 1,000m
  • El Paso - Start and finish in the heart of the island

Subida a las Estrellas

One of the most unique events on the trail running calendar. This 3.2 km night vertical race with 610m of elevation gain takes place on Friday evening, the night before the main races. La Palma is a Starlight Reserve and Reventón makes the most of this unique status: runners climb under a blanket of stars with extraordinary visibility thanks to the island’s strict dark-sky protection regulations.

Two La Palma races in one month

La Palma hosts two of Spain’s most important trail races: Reventón Trail in March and Transvulcania in May. Although they share the same island, they are very different events. Reventón is a popular festival with six accessible distances, while Transvulcania is a world-class elite ultra. Many runners plan their season to do both. Use our season planner to organize both events in your calendar.

Combine racing and vacation

La Palma is an ideal destination for combining the race with a few days of holiday. The island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offers hiking in the Caldera de Taburiente, black sand beaches, stargazing, and excellent Canarian cuisine. March is a perfect time to visit La Palma, with pleasant temperatures and nature in full bloom.

Sun protection for Reventón Trail

Protección solar

Tenerife's volcanic malpaís terrain offers minimal natural shade. In March, the Canary Islands UV index is already significant, and the exposed ridges of Cumbre Vieja and the Caldera rim leave runners under direct sun for extended periods.

Browse all protección solar

Tips

  • Reapply every 2 hours, even on cloudy days
  • The volcanic ridges above 1,000m are fully exposed with little shade
  • March sun in the Canaries is deceptively strong — do not skip sun protection
  • Protect lips and ears, which burn quickly during hours on open terrain

Body care for Reventón Trail

Cuidado corporal

Long hours on exposed volcanic terrain in La Palma call for proper body protection. A visor helps manage heat, while UV headwear and quality sunglasses shield against the intense Canary Islands sun.

Browse all cuidado corporal

Tips

  • A visor keeps sun off your face while allowing heat to escape on the warm volcanic sections
  • A UV-protective buff shields neck and ears on the exposed Cumbre Vieja ridges
  • Wraparound sunglasses protect against glare on the bright volcanic rock
