Kangas Mountain

Kangas Mountain is the race that kicks off the trail season in Asturias every February. With twelve editions under its belt, this event organized by Club Deportivo Komty Sport has become a must-attend fixture for mountain runners in northern Spain.

The Course

From Cangas de Onís, the historic capital of Asturias, the four courses head into the surrounding mountains. Routes cross the summits of Pico del Arbolín and Pico de la Cerica, offering spectacular views of the Picos de Europa. The return crosses the Roman Bridge over the Sella River, one of the race’s most iconic images.

  • Maxi Trail (58K) — 3,500m D+ over the highest summits. 6:30 start with mandatory headlamp.
  • Original Trail (33K) — 2,000m D+ through the heart of the classic course. The race’s flagship distance.
  • Half Trail (21K) — 1,400m D+ for those seeking a tough challenge without the ultra distance.
  • Speed Trail (12K) — 550m D+ for the fastest runners or those making their mountain debut.

Terrain and Difficulty

The terrain combines forest tracks, firebreaks and mountain paths through chestnut and beech forests. In February, mud and dampness are constant companions, and residual snow may be found at higher elevations. The elevation gain per kilometre is demanding, especially on the Maxi Trail and Original Trail. Check our best trail running shoes for 2026 guide to find shoes with the right grip for mud and wet terrain.

February Weather in Asturias

February in Asturias means pure Atlantic winter: cold, humidity and the chance of rain or snow. Valley temperatures hover around 5-10°C, but summits can drop below freezing. A waterproof windbreaker is not optional. Fog can appear and disappear within minutes.

Cangas de Onís

Cangas de Onís was the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias. Its Roman Bridge, with the Cruz de la Victoria hanging from the central arch, is one of Asturias’s most recognizable symbols. The town offers excellent gastronomy, cider houses and is the gateway to the Lakes of Covadonga and the Picos de Europa.
