The 101 Kilometres in 24 Hours - La Legión

The 101 km La Legión is an ultra-endurance march with 2,819 m of elevation gain through the Serranía de Ronda (Málaga-Cádiz). With over 9,000 participants across four categories, it is one of the most massive ultra-endurance events in Spain. 24 hours to complete a course that crosses Ronda, Arriate, Alcalá del Valle, Setenil de las Bodegas, Montejaque and Benaoján.

The 101 Kilometres in 24 Hours - La Legión was born as a tribute to the historic march carried out by the Spanish Legion between the front lines and Tetuán to aid Melilla. What started as a military event has become one of the most popular ultra marches in Spain, attracting thousands of participants from across the country every year.

The Course

The 101-kilometre course has 2,819 metres of cumulative elevation gain. It starts and finishes in Ronda, crossing six municipalities between the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz through the Serranía de Ronda.

Participants will pass through:

  • Ronda — Monumental town with its iconic Puente Nuevo bridge over the gorge
  • Arriate — Guadalcobacín valley
  • Alcalá del Valle — Subbética mountain range
  • Setenil de las Bodegas — Famous for its cave houses built under overhanging rocks
  • Montejaque — Karst landscape of the sierra
  • Benaoján — Cueva de la Pileta and natural surroundings

The terrain is Mediterranean mountain: wide dirt paths, trails, forest tracks and some short asphalt sections. It is not particularly technical, but the distance and cumulative elevation make it a serious challenge. Use our time estimator to plan your pacing over the 101 kilometres.

Race Categories

The event offers four categories: Individual March (4,700 spots), Team March (1,100 spots), MTB (3,200 spots) and Children’s Race (1,200 spots). In total, over 9,000 participants gather in Ronda each year.

The Individual March is the flagship category for trail runners and ultra-distance athletes. The time limit is 24 hours, allowing participants to run or march. The course has 20 aid stations spread along the route.

The Night Challenge

The start is at 09:30 on Saturday, which means most participants will face a long night section. A reliable headlamp with a spare battery is essential. Temperatures in the Serranía de Ronda can drop significantly at night, even in May.
