Terrain
Andalusia packs a diversity of terrain that is hard to match anywhere on the Peninsula. Sierra Nevada, with Mulhacén at 3,482 meters, delivers high-mountain running on rocky trails with demanding elevation gains. Serranía de Ronda and Sierra de las Nieves combine limestone, ancient pinsapo fir forests and deep gorges. Further east, Cazorla is a labyrinth of forest tracks and trails through centuries-old pine forests. Along the coast, Cabo de Gata Natural Park lets you run alongside volcanic cliffs at sea level.
Key areas
Climate & best season
Andalusian summers are extreme inland, with temperatures exceeding 40 °C in low valleys. However, Sierra Nevada allows summer running above 2,000 meters with pleasant temperatures. Autumn and spring are the golden season: mild temperatures, long days and spectacular landscapes. Winter is viable on the coast and lower ranges, but snow covers Sierra Nevada from December to April.
Trail culture
Andalusia has a trail running culture in full bloom. Ultra Sierra Nevada has established itself as one of southern Europe's benchmark races, attracting international runners every spring. Local clubs organize dozens of popular races that traverse historic paths, muleteers' trails and transhumance routes. Post-race gastronomy — gazpacho, salmorejo and tapas — is an inseparable part of the experience. And the proximity between mountains and coast lets you combine mountain races with Mediterranean recovery.
