Mixed Terrain Races in Spain 2026
Mixed terrain races break the boundaries between road and mountain. They are courses that combine road sections, forest tracks, technical trails and sometimes even beach or urban areas in the same event. This format is increasingly popular because it offers variety within a single race and attracts both road runners wanting to try mountain and trail runners who enjoy versatility. Spain has very interesting mixed events, especially in coastal areas where the course climbs from sea level to mountain elevations and back down. Footwear is the biggest challenge: you need something that works on both road and trail, which usually means trail shoes with a not-too-aggressive sole. If you get bored running on the same type of surface, mixed terrain races are your format.

Tips
Choose hybrid trail/road shoes with a moderate sole: you need trail traction without discomfort on tarmac.
Adapt your pace to each section: do not burn all your energy on the flat road, save reserves for the mountain.
If the race includes beach sections, practise running on sand — it is much more demanding than it seems.
