Uharte-Arakil Beriain Km Bertikala: Sakana’s Vertical Kilometer

The Km Bertikala is the vertical kilometer race connecting Uharte-Arakil with the summit of Beriain (San Donato), the most iconic peak in the Sakana valley in Navarra. Now in its 16th edition, it’s one of the most established vertical races on the Navarrese calendar, counting for both the Navarre Championship and the Euskal Herriko Kopa.

The 5 km course climbs 1,023 m of elevation gain, starting from the town square at 471 m and finishing at the chapel of San Donato at 1,494 m. A pure, grueling ascent that tests endurance and mental toughness.

The Course: From Oak Forest to Summit

The race starts from the Uharte-Arakil town square, passes through the Itxesi neighborhood to the swimming pool area, and enters a dense oak forest. The woodland gradually gives way to beech forest as altitude increases, before the final open sections leading to the summit.

Key course details:

  • 5 km distance, 1,023 m D+
  • Cutoff at Auntzaldapa (km 3.3): 50 minutes
  • Maximum time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Staggered pair start
  • Finish at the San Donato chapel with panoramic views of all Sakana

Uharte-Arakil and the Sakana Valley

Uharte-Arakil is a small Navarrese municipality at the foot of the Aralar mountain range, in the heart of the Sakana valley. Well-connected by train and road, it’s a strategic base between Pamplona and the Basque Country.

The summit of Beriain (1,494 m) is the highest point of the Andia/Urbasa range visible from across the valley. At the top stands the San Donato chapel, a traditional pilgrimage site. On clear days, the views from the summit span from the Pyrenees to the Cantabrian coast.
