GR 322 Nafarroa Xtrem

GR 322 Nafarroa Xtrem is a mountain race that follows the trails of the GR 322 long-distance path in the western Pyrenees of Navarra. Starting and finishing in Zubiri, in the Esteribar Valley, the race completes a full loop around Monte Adi over a demanding 35-kilometre course with 1,800 metres of elevation gain.

Organised since 2016, the Nafarroa Xtrem has established itself as one of the key races on the Navarran calendar, attracting over 1,000 runners each year from across Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal.

The course

The NX35 starts from the Zubiri sports complex and circles Monte Adi along GR 322 trails. Runners will pass through:

  • Azegi Peak — A demanding climb with views over the Esteribar Valley
  • Zotalar Peak — Ridges and technical high-mountain Pyrenean terrain
  • Beech and oak forests — Shaded sections on the flanks of Monte Adi
  • GR 322 trails — The backbone of the route, marked with red and white blazes

Terrain and difficulty

The terrain is varied and technical: Pyrenean mountain trails, ridges, forested sections, and forest track segments. Difficulty is advanced due to the combination of distance (35 km), cumulative elevation gain (1,800m D+), and technical terrain. In April, expect mud, residual snow at higher elevations, and cool temperatures. Check the best trail running shoes for 2026 to find the right grip for these conditions.

Pairs category

In addition to the individual race, the Nafarroa Xtrem offers the NX35 Bikoteak (pairs) category, where two runners complete the same course together. It is a popular option for those who prefer to share the experience.

How to get there

Zubiri is in the Esteribar Valley, just 25 kilometres from Pamplona via the N-135, the road that climbs towards France through Roncesvalles. The village is a classic stage on the Camino de Santiago and has accommodation available, though limited — booking in advance or staying in Pamplona is advisable.
