Irati Trail

The Irati Trail is a 30 km mountain race with 2,000 meters of elevation gain through the heart of the Irati Forest, the second-largest beech-fir forest in Europe. Organized by Club Deportivo Irati-Salazar, the race starts and finishes at the Irati-Abodi Mountain Center and summits Orhi (2,017 m), the first 2,000-meter peak of the western Pyrenees.

What makes this race special is that it doesn’t pass through any village: the entire course runs through the interior of the forest and the Navarrese high mountains. A genuine commitment to the environment: zero plastic waste at aid stations or course markings.

The Course

From the Abodi Mountain Center, the course enters the Irati Forest through these key waypoints:

  • Abodi — Initial ridge with panoramic views over the forest
  • Zamukadoia — Deep immersion into the beech forest
  • Ermita — Historic landmark in the heart of the woods
  • Mirador de Akerreria — Viewpoint overlooking the valley
  • Ibarrondoa — Mid-mountain section before the final ascent
  • Orhi Ascent — 4.2 km with 900 m elevation to the summit (2,017 m)
  • Orhi Descent — Technical descent back to the forest
  • Pikatua — Final kilometers returning to the Mountain Center

The Orhi Climb

The defining moment of the race: 4.2 kilometers with 900 meters of elevation gain to the summit of Orhi. It’s a demanding climb that requires mountain experience. From the top, views stretch across the entire Navarrese Pyrenees, the Irati Forest, and on clear days, all the way to the Bay of Biscay.

The Irati Forest

The Irati Forest is a 17,000-hectare beech and fir woodland in the Navarrese Pyrenees, between the Aezkoa and Salazar valleys. It’s one of Europe’s best-preserved forests and a unique running environment: leaf-covered trails, streams, and exceptional biodiversity. The race uses existing trails to minimize environmental impact.
