Trail Covatelles: Mediterranean Mountain Running from Oliva

Trail Covatelles is a trail running race starting from Oliva, in the Safor region (Valencia), heading into the Sierra de la Safor to reach the Cim de Covatelles. Now in its third edition, it has become an established fixture on the Valencian trail calendar.

Organized by Club L’Espenta de Oliva, Trail Covatelles offers two competitive distances that share a privileged setting: Mediterranean mountain with sea views, pine forests, limestone rock, and technical trails climbing from the coast to the Safor summits.

The Distances

  • Trail 23K — 1,000m D+, the main event. Full route through Sierra de la Safor with the ascent to Cim de Covatelles (640m). Technical sections, ridgeline trails, and panoramic Mediterranean views.
  • Sprint 13K — 550m D+, shorter but demanding. Ideal for runners seeking their first Mediterranean mountain challenge.

There’s also a non-competitive 12K hike for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery without the race pressure.

Sierra de la Safor

The Sierra de la Safor is a coastal mountain range separating the Safor and Vall d’Albaida regions. Puig de la Safor (1,013m) and Cim de Covatelles (640m) are its most iconic peaks. Trails wind through Aleppo pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, and limestone formations with constant sea views.

It’s terrain that combines mountain toughness with Mediterranean mildness: in March, temperatures are pleasant, days grow longer, and vegetation begins to bloom.

Oliva and the Safor Region

Oliva is much more than a beach town. Its historic center preserves medieval heritage, and the Safor region offers cuisine built on rice, fideuà, and fresh Valencian produce. Nearby Gandía expands the cultural and gastronomic options.

Arriving on Saturday to combine beach, mountain, and gastronomy makes for a perfect trail running weekend.
