Marató dels Dements
The Marató dels Dements is much more than a mountain race: it is the final of the Skyrunner World Series (Skymasters), the event where each year the world’s best skyrunners are crowned. Since 2016, the Sierra de Espadán has become the November stage for one of the most technical and spectacular races on the international skyrunning calendar.
With 42.5 km and 3,808 metres of elevation gain, the Marató connects Eslida to Aín through a wild course in the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, passing iconic summits like Pico Espadán and gorges like Barranc del Roig. The terrain is almost entirely mountain trail, with highly technical sections that justify its status as a top-tier skyrunning event.
The events
The Marató dels Dements offers two events:
- Marató — 42.5 km with 3,808m D+. Starts at 7:30 AM from Eslida with an 11-hour time limit. The main event and final of the Skyrunner World Series.
- Mitja — 22.5 km with 2,007m D+. Starts at 8:00 AM the following day from Aín with a 5-hour 30-minute time limit.
The course
The route crosses the Sierra de Espadán from north to south, connecting the municipalities of Eslida, Aín, Fondeguilla and Azuébar. The highest point reaches 1,049 metres. The trails wind through cork oak, pine and holm oak forests, with Mediterranean Sea views on the ridge sections.
The Sierra de Espadán is the second largest natural park in the Comunidad Valenciana and home to one of the largest cork oak forests on the Iberian Peninsula. A privileged natural setting for a race that combines world-class elite racing with Mediterranean mountain terrain.
