Desafío Ultra El Cainejo

Desafío Ultra El Cainejo takes place every May in Caín de Valdeón, a village deep in the heart of Picos de Europa National Park (León). It’s one of Spain’s most technical and vertical trail races, with routes following ancient shepherd paths through the most imposing massifs of the Cantabrian Mountains.

The distances

The 2026 edition features three races:

  • Desafío Ultra 52K — 5,500m D+, starting Saturday May 23 at 6:00 AM. The flagship race traverses limestone channels, exposed sections with ropes and chains, and packs an extreme elevation-to-distance ratio.
  • Cainejo 35K — 3,200m D+, starting Saturday May 23 at 6:45 AM. Shares part of the ultra route in a more accessible but equally demanding format.
  • Cainejín 19K — 1,800m D+, starting Sunday May 24 at 8:00 AM. 6-hour time limit. The shorter option, but with an incredibly high elevation-per-kilometre ratio.

The terrain

Picos de Europa is pure limestone. The routes cross steep channels, exposed ridges and sections requiring ropes and chains to progress. The terrain is loose, technical and demands constant concentration. The trails the race follows were carved by shepherds moving their flocks between the valleys and highland pastures. Read our best trail running shoes guide for advice on choosing footwear for this type of technical limestone terrain.

Caín de Valdeón

Caín is a village of barely 30 inhabitants at the bottom of the Cares Gorge, surrounded by vertical walls exceeding 2,000 metres. Access is via a narrow mountain road that winds through limestone walls. It’s an isolated place with no mobile coverage, where the mountain sets the rules.

The Ruta del Cares

Part of the route coincides with the famous Ruta del Cares, but there’s a strict rule: running on this section is prohibited. The organisation places time controls and violations result in automatic disqualification.

May weather

May in Picos de Europa is unpredictable. Valleys can be warm, but summit conditions can be wintry: wind, rain, fog and even residual snow above 2,000 metres. Preparation for any weather scenario is mandatory.

Use our time estimator to set realistic goals for the Ultra 52K, and review the mandatory gear guide before heading to Picos. Explore more races in Castilla y Leon.
