Transgrancanaria

Transgrancanaria is a 128K ultra with 7,500m of elevation gain that crosses Gran Canaria from north to south, from Agaete to Maspalomas. It is part of the UTMB World Series. Held in February, it offers runners great weather while the rest of Europe is deep in winter.

Transgrancanaria is one of the most prestigious ultras on the world calendar and the flagship race of the European winter season. Every February, more than 5,000 runners from around the globe gather in Gran Canaria to traverse the island from north to south along trails that stretch from the Atlantic coast to the island’s highest peak.

The course

The Classic 128K departs from Agaete (north), climbs to the central summit of the island (1,949m), and descends to the Maspalomas Dunes (south). It passes through 7 different microclimates in a single course.

The route is a journey through Gran Canaria’s most varied landscapes:

  • Tamadaba - Canarian pine forest at 1,400m above sea level
  • Roque Nublo (1,813m) - Volcanic monolith and emblem of the island
  • Pico de las Nieves (1,949m) - The highest point on Gran Canaria
  • Deep ravines - Technical descents through volcanic gorges
  • Maspalomas Dunes - Finish on the beach, running across sand

A winter race with summer weather

Transgrancanaria takes place in February, when temperatures in Gran Canaria range from 15 to 25 degrees. It is the perfect ultra for escaping the European cold and racing in warm weather.

Gran Canaria enjoys a subtropical microclimate that brings pleasant temperatures year-round. In February, while Europe is buried under snow, runners can train and compete in short sleeves. However, on the summits temperatures can drop to 5 degrees and wind is common.

UTMB World Series

Transgrancanaria is part of the UTMB World Series. The Classic 128K awards 6 UTMB Index points and direct qualification for UTMB in Chamonix. The Advanced 83K awards 5 points.

Inclusion in the UTMB World Series has elevated Transgrancanaria to the highest international level. Runners from more than 70 countries take part each year, turning Gran Canaria into the capital of European ultra trail running in February. Check our ITRA points guide to understand how UTMB qualification works.

Combine racing and vacation

Gran Canaria makes it easy to combine the race with a beach holiday in February. The finish in Maspalomas is right next to one of the most famous beaches in the Canary Islands. Many runners take the opportunity to stay a few extra days.

The island also offers hiking, cycling, surfing, and excellent cuisine. It is common for runners to travel with family or a partner and combine the competition with active tourism.
