Tenerife Bluetrail by UTMB

Tenerife Bluetrail is one of the most spectacular mountain races in the world. The course crosses the island of Tenerife from south to north, from Los Cristianos beach to Puerto de la Cruz, passing over the summit of Mount Teide at 3,555 meters above sea level. It is the highest mountain race in Spain and the second highest in Europe.

Tenerife Bluetrail is part of the UTMB World Series and after fourteen editions has established itself as one of the best ultra-trail races in Europe. Thousands of runners from around the world make the pilgrimage to Tenerife every March, drawn by its unique volcanic landscapes and the challenge of summiting the rooftop of Spain.

The Course

The 110K departs from Los Cristianos beach at nightfall. Runners ascend through volcanic landscapes, cross Canary pine forests and lava fields before reaching the 3,555-meter summit of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain.

The course is a journey through the most extreme landscapes of Tenerife:

  • Los Cristianos Beach - Start at sea level, at night
  • Vilaflor - The highest village in Spain, at 1,400m
  • Teide National Park - UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Summit of Mount Teide (3,555m) - The highest point in Spain
  • Sea of clouds - A unique phenomenon between 1,200 and 1,800m
  • Laurel forest - Subtropical rainforest on the northern slopes
  • Puerto de la Cruz - Finish by the sea in the north of the island

From the Beach to the Stars

What makes the Tenerife Bluetrail unique is its extreme elevation gain: runners go from sea level to 3,555 meters in a single race. Conditions change dramatically along the course: heat on the coast, extreme cold at the summit and humidity in the northern forests.

At the summit of Mount Teide, under a sky with some of the best astronomical quality in the world, runners experience real high-mountain conditions with temperatures that can drop to -5°C and strong winds.

UTMB World Series

Tenerife Bluetrail is part of the UTMB World Series as a Major event. The 110K is classified in the 100M category, awarding points toward qualification for the UTMB in Chamonix. The competitive level is extremely high, with regular appearances by international elite runners. Read our ITRA points guide to understand the qualification system.

Combining Racing and Holiday

Tenerife is an ideal destination to combine the race with a holiday. The island offers beaches, hiking in Teide National Park, whale watching, Canarian cuisine and spring-like weather all year round. Many runners travel with their families and take the opportunity to enjoy the island before and after the race.

Use our time estimator to factor in the extreme altitude when setting your goals, and review the mandatory gear guide to prepare. Explore more races in the Canary Islands.
