Trail Minero Santa Bárbara

Trail Minero Santa Bárbara is, arguably, the race with the most symbolic weight on the Asturian calendar. Organized by HUNOSA, Asturias’s public mining company, the race pays tribute to miners and to Santa Bárbara, their patron saint, held every year around her feast day, December 4.

A route through mining memory

The Maratón TMSB (42K, 5,650m of climbing) starts at 8:00 from the historic Pozo Santiago, in Caborana (Aller), and crosses the municipalities of Aller, Mieres, Langreo and Laviana, passing iconic mine shafts such as Espinos, San José (Turón) and San Luis (Langreo), reaching its highest point at Picu Cutrifera (1,064m). The SpeedTrail (16K, 2,000m of climbing) offers a shorter version, starting at 10:00 from Pozo Carrio, in Laviana.

Both categories converge at the common finish line: Pozo Sotón, in San Martín del Rey Aurelio, a former coal mine now converted into a heritage museum. During the race, the turullu sounds — the siren that once marked shift changes in the mines — as a sound tribute to the miners who worked these shafts.

Sport and industrial heritage

Participants get free access to the Centre for Mining Experiences and Memory (CEMM), located at Pozo Sotón itself, which turns this race into an experience that goes beyond sport: a way to learn first-hand about Asturias’s mining history while running through landscapes shaped by generations of work.

The mining basins beyond the race

After the race, take the chance to visit Pozo Sotón and its museum at a relaxed pace, or discover other industrial remains in the Caudal and Nalón basins. Discover other mountain races in the Asturias region and check the race planner to plan your visit.
