GTPE Picos de Europa

GTPE Picos de Europa is one of Spain’s premier trail running events. With five distances ranging from 10 km to a 70 km ultra, the race traverses the western massif of Picos de Europa from Benia de Onís (Asturias).

The flagship event, the GTPE 70K, accumulates 5,300 metres of elevation gain and reaches 1,890m at Pico Jultayu. It is a semi-self-sufficiency race that tests endurance, technique and race management.

The 70K course

The 70 km ultra covers almost the entire western massif of Picos de Europa. From Benia de Onís, runners enter high-mountain limestone terrain with iconic sections:

  • Ruta del Cares — The most famous gorge in Picos de Europa
  • Canales de Culiembro and Trea — Technical descents through limestone gullies
  • Pico Jultayu (1,890m) — The highest point on the course, with views of the central massif
  • Vega de Ario (1,630m) — One of the most spectacular alpine meadows in Picos
  • Lagos de Covadonga — The iconic Enol and Ercina lakes in the final section

The course passes through checkpoints at La Berruga, La Molina, Camba, Culiembro, Jultayu, Vega de Ario, Entrelagos, Porra de Enol, Entrepeñas and Demues before the finish.

The other distances

The GTPE 48K (2,700m D+) is the ultra’s younger sibling, also traversing the western massif with a passage over Porra de Enol (1,279m). The 35K (2,200m D+) runs through the lower passes of Onís and the gorges of the Casaño river. The 22K (1,383m D+) and 10K (500m D+) are more accessible options without sacrificing the Picos scenery.

Terrain and difficulty

Technical limestone, loose scree, stone gullies and sustained gradients. Picos de Europa is demanding terrain even for experienced runners. Shoes with aggressive tread are essential. Poles are highly recommended for managing the elevation on the longer distances.

Atlantic climate at altitude

June in Picos de Europa can bring heat in the valleys and intense cold at the summits. Fog and rain appear without warning. The organization may modify courses if weather conditions require it. Always carry waterproof clothing, even if the sky is clear at the start.
