All products in this guide

Garmin dominates trail for a reason: its catalogue covers everyone from the beginner runner to the expedition adventurer, with the most mature metrics-and-maps ecosystem on the market. But that breadth is confusing: Forerunner or Fenix? Is the Enduro 3 worth it? What do you lose with the 165 versus the 965? This guide compares the six key Garmins of 2026 and tells you which one is yours.

GPS battery = each manufacturer's standard GPS mode; multi-band = dual-frequency (maximum accuracy). On Suunto, Polar Grit and Amazfit T-Rex the GPS figure already corresponds to dual-band mode. Figures verified against the manufacturer.

Forerunner vs Fenix vs Enduro vs Instinct

Forerunner: light and running-focused

The Forerunner range is pure running: light, comfortable and with all the training metrics. The 165 is the entry point (AMOLED, no multi-band or maps); the 265 adds multi-band and music; the 965 adds topo maps and more battery without going over 53 g. For 90% of trail runners, a Forerunner is plenty.

Fenix: the do-it-all multisport

The Fenix 8 is the flagship: maps, multi-band, flashlight, speaker, microphone and a sapphire case with dive rating. You pay for it in price and a bit of bulk, but there’s nothing it won’t do. For anyone who wants a single watch for trail, mountain, bike and daily life.

Enduro and Instinct: battery above all

The Enduro 3 exists for one thing: limitless battery (120 h GPS, solar). The Instinct 3 Solar lowers the price and drops maps, but gains military ruggedness and near-infinite solar charging in daily use.

Our recommendations by profile

  • Best Overall — Garmin Forerunner 965. The range’s perfect balance: maps, multi-band, AMOLED and full metrics in 53 g. The Garmin you’d recommend to almost anyone.
  • Best for ultras — Garmin Enduro 3. When the race lasts longer than everyone else’s battery, this is the only one that holds on.
  • Best Value — Garmin Forerunner 265. Multi-band, music and AMOLED at a much more sensible price than the 965.
  • Best rugged — Garmin Instinct 3 Solar. Indestructible and with solar battery, for those who really punish their gear.

A single Garmin to get it right? The Forerunner 965. Tight budget? The 265 gives you almost everything for far less.
