Mandatory gear for ultra trail: complete guide 2026

24 out of 30 ultra trail races we analyzed in Spain require mandatory gear. Depending on distance and terrain, you’ll need between 6 and 19 items. Missing even one can mean immediate disqualification at bib collection or at a checkpoint during the race. The total cost of gearing up from scratch is around 320-870 EUR, though if you already run trail you’ll likely only need to spend 30-60 EUR to fill in the gaps.

We’ve analyzed the mandatory gear lists from every race in our database to create this guide. Here you’ll find what each type of race requires, which product we recommend in each category, and the most common mistakes runners make.

The 12 mandatory gear categories

Universal gear: required by almost every race

These four items appear most frequently in race regulations across Spain:

CategoryRaces requiring itPurposeRecommended productPrice
Wind jacket88%Protection from wind and cold at altitudeSalomon Bonatti WP110 EUR
Charged mobile phone67%Emergency communication and GPS tracking--
Emergency blanket67%Hypothermia prevention during forced stopsLifesystems Thermal Blanket9 EUR
Emergency whistle63%Acoustic signaling for rescue teamsFox 40 Classic12 EUR

The wind jacket is the king of mandatory gear: nearly 9 out of 10 races with a gear list require one. Not any jacket will do — it must be a technical, lightweight, and packable wind jacket. Many races specify it must be waterproof with a hood and sealed seams.

Emergency blankets are single-use: bring a new one for every race. Previously used blankets may have micro-perforations that reduce their reflective capacity. At 9 EUR each, it’s not worth the risk.

The whistle has a universal distress signal: three blasts, pause, three blasts. It’s one of the most commonly checked items at the start.

Distance-specific gear: what changes for ultras and night races

These items become mandatory when races exceed certain distances or include night sections:

Pay attention to poles: they are prohibited at Zegama-Aizkorri but mandatory for the 100K distance at Ultra Pirineu and at Travesera de Picos de Europa. Always read the specific regulations for your race.

For headlamps, look for at least 200 lumens and enough battery life for the full night. At Gran Trail Aneto-Posets 105K and Tenerife Bluetrail 110K, two headlamps are required.

Weather gear: technical clothing for mountain conditions

Technical clothing layers become mandatory in races at altitude, during autumn-winter, or with variable weather:

What’s the difference between a wind jacket and a rain jacket? The wind jacket blocks wind and repels light rain. The rain jacket has sealed seams and withstands prolonged rain. Races like Gran Trail Peñalara require both.

What each type of race requires

Not all races demand the same gear. We’ve grouped requirements by race type so you know what to expect:

RaceTypeMandatory itemsSpecial rule

Ultra Sierra NevadaSummer high-mountain ultra6Sun protection and altitude focus

Gran Trail Aneto-PosetsExtreme vertical ultra192 headlamps, rear light, SPOT locator

Gran Trail Aneto-Posets has the most mandatory gear in Spain: 19 items for its 105K distance, including a SPOT satellite locator and rear red light. At the other end, Zegama-Aizkorri only requires a lightweight wind jacket.

The 7 most common mandatory gear mistakes

  1. Buying everything the day before at the start village. Shops get crowded, sizes sell out, and you have no time to test anything. Buy at least a month ahead and train with your gear.

  2. Using brand-new gear on race day. A new pack can chafe, unadjusted poles can collapse, an untested headlamp can die. Use every piece of gear in at least one long training run.

  3. Reusing an emergency blanket from a previous race. Emergency blankets are single-use. A blanket with micro-perforations loses reflective capacity. At 9 EUR, it’s not worth the risk.

  4. Not reading the specific race regulations. Each race has variations. Poles are prohibited at Zegama but mandatory at Ultra Pirineu 100K. Mallorca by UTMB requires 1.5 L of water for its longer distances.

  5. Skimping on the hydration pack. A bad pack causes chafing that costs you hours of suffering. It’s the most important investment after shoes.

  6. Using a cheap headlamp with AAA batteries. They die halfway through the night and lack sufficient power. Invest in a rechargeable headlamp with at least 200 lumens and carry a spare battery.

  7. Forgetting the whistle until bib collection. It’s one of the most commonly checked items at the start. Keep it accessible from the moment you pack.

How to pack your bag the day before

  1. One week before: download and print the official mandatory gear list from your race’s regulations.
  2. Check what you already have: verify condition (new emergency blanket, batteries charged, zippers working).
  3. Buy what you’re missing: don’t leave anything for the last day.
  4. Loading order: heavy items close to your back (hydration, food), light items in pockets (blanket, whistle).
  5. Accessibility: emergency blanket and wind jacket in quick-access external pockets.
  6. Take a photo: photograph everything laid out before packing. If you forget something at an aid station, you’ll know what’s missing.
