Basajaun Trail Race: Sierra de Lokiz at its finest

Basajaun Trail Race is a mountain race starting and finishing in Galdeano (Valle de Allín, Navarra, Spain). Its name pays homage to the Basajaun, the lord of the forests in Basque mythology, and its course traverses the Sierra de Lokiz, one of Navarra’s most spectacular karst massifs.

The event offers three distances: the BTR 43K (2,550 m elevation gain), BTR 23K (1,350 m), and BTR 13K (700 m), with staggered starts at 8:00, 9:00, and 9:30 AM respectively.

The courses: Sierra de Lokiz

Sierra de Lokiz is a karst massif between the Améscoa and Allín valleys in western Navarra. The courses cross some of the most iconic areas of the range:

  • Basaula Canyon: impressive gorge carved by water
  • San Cosme: hermitage with panoramic views
  • Santiago de Lokiz: 12th-century Romanesque church in the heart of the range
  • Muneta Pass: mountain pass between valleys
  • Ollobarren Caves: unique karst formations

The BTR 43K is the long, demanding course with 2,550 meters of elevation gain through a complete itinerary that traverses the entire range. The BTR 23K offers an intermediate challenge, and the BTR 13K is the most accessible option.

Galdeano: gateway to Sierra de Lokiz

Galdeano is a small village in the Valle de Allín, about 40 km from Pamplona. Nestled at the foot of Sierra de Lokiz, it’s a starting point for hiking and mountain routes through one of Navarra’s most valuable natural environments.
