Terrain
Melilla is a unique case in Spanish trail running: an enclave city where running merges with history, modernist architecture, and the African Mediterranean. There's no high mountain, but there are coastal routes with simultaneous views of two continents, trails surrounding centuries-old fortifications, and periurban parks where you train with the Moroccan Rif as backdrop. It's territory for short distances, repetitions, and creative formats like backyard ultra. The sea is always present, the heat too, and every corner tells a story of borders and coexistence.
Key areas
Climate & best season
Melilla's climate is Mediterranean with African influence: mild winters, hot dry summers. From June to September the heat can be stifling, with temperatures approaching 40°C and sea humidity making it even tougher. The best windows for running are early spring and late autumn, when temperatures drop to manageable levels and occasional storms refresh the air. Winter is surprisingly pleasant: clear skies, 15-20°C, intense Mediterranean light. Always hydrate more than usual.
Trail culture
Melilla's trail culture is young, intense, and experimental. Without mountains to climb, the local community has reinvented trail as urban sport, mental endurance, and innovative formats. The backyard ultra "El Último León" is the emblem of this philosophy: infinite loops, African heat, until only one remains standing. Here you run at dawn to avoid the sun, train on the maritime promenade with views of Morocco, and celebrate every small race as community event. It's border city trail: multicultural, resilient, proud of its uniqueness.
