Terrain
The Valencian Community is a laboratory of contrasts: from the limestone peaks of Penyagolosa, wrapped in fog and legend, to the coastal trails that graze the Mediterranean Sea. Interior ravines—like Infern or Salt de la Núvia—offer technical descents between vertical walls and lush vegetation. The Serra d'Aitana, at almost 1,600 meters, dominates Alicante province, while the Desert de les Palmes near Castellón surprises with its arid landscape and hidden hermitages. It's a region where you can start the day in high mountains and finish with your feet in the water.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The Mediterranean climate grants long trail running windows. Winter and early spring are ideal: clear skies, mild temperatures, and accessible peaks without the stifling summer heat. From June to September the heat can be brutal, especially in the interior ranges, where there's no shade and humidity clings to your skin. Autumn is magical: the sea is still warm, the mountains turn ochre, and races multiply. Always carry more water than you think you need.
Trail culture
The Valencian Community has one of Spain's most vibrant trail scenes. Penyagolosa Trails has put the region on the international map, but the culture goes far beyond: local groups training in every ravine, clubs organizing vertical races in inland villages, and a network of impeccably signposted GR and PR trails. Here trail running is a popular, accessible sport, rooted in historic pilgrimages to Sant Joan de Penyagolosa. Post-race gastronomy is sacred ritual: arròs, coca de tomate, and cold beer as the sun sinks into the Mediterranean.
