Terrain
Aragon is synonymous with vertical Pyrenees. Here stand Spain's most imposing three-thousanders: Aneto, Posets, Monte Perdido. The valleys of Benasque, Ordesa, or Tena are cathedrals of rock and ice where trail running becomes light alpinism. Trails cross glacial cirques, exposed ridges, and vertiginous ravines demanding technique and respect. It's not terrain for beginners: slopes are brutal, accumulated elevation gains count in thousands of meters, and altitude punishes. But for those seeking pure mountain trail, without artifice, Aragon offers some of Europe's most epic routes.
Key areas
Climate & best season
The Aragonese climate is continental high mountain, with very specific windows for safe running. June to September is the golden season, when snow recedes and passes open. July and August are peak months, with mild temperatures at altitude but risk of evening storms requiring dawn starts. September is magical: fewer people, autumn colors, and stable conditions. The rest of the year, snow and ice dominate the three-thousanders, turning trail into winter mountaineering requiring technical gear. Spring is unpredictable: it can snow heavily through May.
Trail culture
The Aragonese trail community is as tough as its mountains. Here verticality is valued, along with suffering capacity and technical terrain knowledge. Local runners grow up seeing 3,000-meter peaks from their villages and dream of linking them. Canfranc-Canfranc is the region's totemic race, a 100km beast crossing historic valleys and legendary passes. The atmosphere is of mountaineers who run, not runners who go to the mountains: the difference is subtle but profound. Here respect goes to those who know the terrain, who can read the weather, who don't underestimate high mountains. It's trail without concessions, alpine and true.
