For marathon, half marathon or 10K, battery stops being the problem: any current watch easily lasts your 3-5 hours in GPS. What really decides here is something else: GPS accuracy, display, weight and the quality of the training metrics that get you to race day in shape. This comparison picks the watches that best balance those four factors for road and fast-trail runners.

GPS battery = each manufacturer's standard GPS mode; multi-band = dual-frequency (maximum accuracy). On Suunto, Polar Grit and Amazfit T-Rex the GPS figure already corresponds to dual-band mode. Figures verified against the manufacturer.

What matters in a marathon watch

Multi-band GPS and accuracy

In the city, between tall buildings, or under dense tree cover, dual-frequency (multi-band) GPS is the difference between a clean track and one that “jumps”. To chase a PB you want reliable distances and paces: the Forerunner 265, the 965, the Suunto Race 2 and the Amazfit Cheetah Pro all have it. The Forerunner 165 and the Polar Pacer Pro skip multi-band to keep the price down.

AMOLED display

At marathon pace you want to read your data at a glance. AMOLED displays (265, 965, Race 2, Cheetah Pro) are sharp and bright even in full sun. The Coros Pace 3 uses MIP: less vivid but perfectly legible and with more battery life.

Weight and metrics

Below 50 g you don’t even feel the watch on your wrist: the Pace 3 (39 g) and the Pacer Pro (41 g) are the lightest. On the training-platform front, Garmin (Training Readiness, load) and Polar (Flow, running power) lead; Coros and Amazfit cover the essentials for less money.

Our recommendations by profile

  • Best Overall — Garmin Forerunner 265. The running sweet spot: AMOLED, multi-band, music and all of Garmin’s metrics at a reasonable price.
  • Best Premium — Garmin Forerunner 965. If you also run trail with navigation, it adds onboard maps and more battery without a weight penalty.
  • Best Value — Coros Pace 3. 39 g, multi-band, maps and 38 h of battery at an entry price. Hard to ask for more for the money.
  • Best Budget — Garmin Forerunner 165. The gateway to Garmin with AMOLED and adaptive metrics, ideal for your first marathon.

If you run on the road and want a single safe pick, the Forerunner 265. If budget is tight, the Pace 3 gives you 90% for half the price.
