Frequently asked questions
What mandatory gear is required for trail races?
Mandatory gear varies by race, but generally includes: an emergency whistle, an emergency blanket, a fully charged mobile phone, and a reusable cup. Ultras and mountain races typically also require a headlamp with spare batteries, a windproof or waterproof jacket, and a minimum water capacity (usually 1L).
How much water should I carry for trail running?
It depends on distance and weather. As a rule of thumb: for short races (10-20K), 500ml may suffice if there are frequent aid stations. For marathons and ultras, carry at least 1L capacity. In summer or on routes without water sources, increase to 1.5-2L. 500ml soft flasks are the most popular option.
What are the best shoes for trail running?
The best shoes depend on the terrain: for technical or rocky terrain look for Vibram soles with good grip; for mud, deep lugs (5mm+); for ultras, prioritize cushioning. Popular brands: Salomon Speedcross (versatile), Hoka Speedgoat (cushioning), La Sportiva Bushido (technical).
What backpack should I choose for an ultra trail?
For ultras (50K+), choose a hydration vest with 8-12L capacity. It should have: front pockets for soft flasks, space for mandatory gear, a pole compartment, and a comfortable fit without chafing. Test it loaded before race day. Recommended brands: Salomon ADV Skin, Compressport, Ultimate Direction.
What nutrition should I bring to a trail race?
Plan for 30-60g of carbohydrates per hour of racing. Combine: gels (quick absorption every 30-45min), bars (chewable for calmer moments), and for ultras add salty solids (nuts, potatoes). Also carry mineral salts and electrolytes. Test everything during training sessions first.
Do I need trekking poles for trail running?
Trekking poles are optional but very useful in races with significant elevation gain (D+). They reduce leg effort on long climbs. They are practically essential in mountain ultras (+3000m D+). Choose foldable or telescopic poles that fit in your pack. Check that they are allowed in the race.
